hip, hip, hooray for SEO
For those of you that are looking to flirt with Google allow me to introduce you to the power of Search Engine Optimization (SEO for short). Three little letters that pack a POWERFUL punch and I’ve only scratched the surface.
From Wikipedia:
Searchengine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the higher a site’s “page rank” (i.e, the earlier it comes in the search results list), the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.
The goal with SEO is to rank as close to the top of Google’s Organic list (the list that appears right below the paid-for ads in the shaded box). It’s been stated that people don’t dig any deeper than the second page of Google’s lists. I RARELY go past the first page of results. If I don’t see what I want on the first page, then I’ll retype my search criteria until what I want is found on the first page.
Consider the snowball effect: the higher your rank is, the more traffic your site will get, the higher your rank goes, and on and on. Who wouldn’t want that?!
That’s why every website I design will come pack with SEO capabilites. If you’re going to do the damn thing, might as well go all out, right?
Above is a screen shot I took this morning of the search results of “Nashville web2.0 designer” (and I’ve only been offering this service officially for 24 hours!!) As you can see I am number one on the Organic List. Pretty sweet, huh? This could be you and your site one of these days.
SEO doesn’t just happen over night. It takes up to 6 to 12 months to really get in there and stake your claim on Google.
So if you want to come out on top, make sure you’re doing everything you can to optimize your search engine results. Feel free to contact me for additional information and how I can help you.
Together we can do great things.
