who is toby sturgill?
Growing up, I always knew I had an artistic flair and an eye for detail. Not knowing what to make of it, my teachers tried to fit me into their mold; I became a student of structure. I ran through the motions of academics, all the while never really utilizing my creativity to its fullest.
When I entered college at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, I had an epiphany: creativity has a process, a formula per se. My debut class in advertising led to the beginning of a beautiful relationship with conceptual thought. For the first time I was able to take all the creativity that was bottled up inside and express my ideas, thoughts, and concepts that had not been utilized in a structured environment.
During college, I co-developed a campaign that was honored with first place at Michigan State University’s advertising/design contest (2005). The campaign was for Morton Salt. My partner and I wanted to showcase the brand’s personality, so the tagline read: “The only salt with a sweet side.” The concept of the campaign depicted the Morton Salt girl interacting with other food brands to show her lovability, thus causing the consumer to be drawn to the sweetness of her character. This campaign sparked my interest in brand development and the marriage of brand and art.
At the end of college, I received VCU’s Mass Communications Faculty Award as the Creative Advertising Student who best exemplified the standards of the Mass Communications department. I was honored to be the only student that semester to receive this accolade.
With awards in hand and a mind filled with ideas, I relocated to Nashville, TN where I began working for The People’s Church. During my time in this position, I learned the unique needs of the church and recognized a desire to develop great design for the congregation. As a result, my new business venture, “PixelsPreach.com,” was born. I had discovered a passion for creating inspiring design for the church as well as clients of all sizes.
I landed a full time design job with Birdsong Creative in 2007 where I grew my creative wings. Projects on which I collaborated received national attention, including work for Jack Hanna and Deepak Chopra to name a few.
In 2008 I launched my own website and became an independent Creative Director & Print Broker, embarking on a journey of culture, arts and technology, striving to provide forward-thinking, concept-driven designs. Whether your medium is print or web2.0, I will work with you to ensure your brand is well taken care of and leaves my hands stronger than it was before.
I consider myself to be a creative renaissance man, always evolving, learning, and growing. It is my dream to influence culture in a way that changes the world.
